The Recruitment Industry

The recruitment industry has changed enormously over the 30-odd years (mostly very odd) that the writer has been involved in it. Most people have little knowledge of the scale of any business sector, and I believe that Joe Public has very little idea about the length and breadth of the recruitment industry.

A recently released report from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) - the industry's guiding body - entitled Annual Industry Turnover and Key Volumes, produced in conjunction with Ernst & Young, a leading professional service provider, provides an illuminating insight into the sector, which we are happy to share with you.

Covering the period April 2005 to March 2006:

5.8% increase in turnover, the highest annual growth since 2000/2001, to £24.838 billion, its highest recorded level
Of this turnover, £21.562 billion resulted from temporary/contract recruitment, and £3.276 billion from permanent placements
97,674 people were employed within the industry
22,653 consultants (23% of the whole) were employed in permanent-only business (4.3% increase on 2004/5)
29,420 people were employed in admin/management (30% of the whole)
The rest 45,601 were consultants working on temp/contract-only business, or a mixture of temp and permanent business.
706,080 permanent placements were made
Permanent sales per employee £66,669
Permanent sales per consultant £96,433

For those of you who are still awake, here at Seltek we produced sales in 2006 36% higher than the average per employee, and 56% higher than average per consultant.

As a famous car hire company once used as its slogan: We may be #2 but we try harder! (I don't think they ever believed they were #2, and frankly, neither do we!)

Six of the Best!

The late, great politician Sir Winston Churchill left a lot of witty aphorisms as his legacy.

  • It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.
  • Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.
  • There are a terrible lot of lies going around the world, and the worst of it is half of them are true.
  • We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
  • To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.
  • From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put.
