It's a Bouncing Baby Economy!

Hopes that Britain is on the verge of a rapid recovery from its deepest post-war plunge in output were boosted yesterday by news that the dominant service sector has returned to growth for the first time in more than a year.

In a welcome piece of good news for Gordon Brown's battered government, an influential barometer of business activity, from banking to tourism, rose three points to 51.7 in May following news earlier this week of an easing of pressure on manufacturing and construction.

A reading above 50 in the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply/Market survey indicates that the service sector – which accounts for around 80% of the economy – is expanding rather than contracting. City analysts said yesterday that if sustained in June, the improvement would lead to growth resuming in the third quarter of the year.

That would represent a much faster bounceback than anticipated in April's Budget, when the chancellor, Alistair Darling, said he did not expect growth until the end of 2009. Data from the eurozone and the United States yesterday was less upbeat, but suggested that the UK could be one of the first major economies to emerge from recession.

40,000 Graduates out of work? Please can we have one!

Class of 2009: up to 40,000 graduates will join jobless roll

Up to 40,000 of this year's graduates will still be struggling to find work in six months' time, according to figures compiled for the Guardian that reveal the scale of the recession's impact on the class of 2009.

The number of new graduates out of work will double compared with last year if unemployment trends follow those of the last recession, careers experts predict.

OK, OK. So it's still not a bed of roses in the wider economy, despite our boundless optimism. However, Seltek is recruiting, and would like to offer one lucky graduate the opportunity to train as a recruitment consultant. What's in it for you? In-depth and ongoing training, constant support from managers and colleagues, an above average basic salary, unlimited potential to earn bonus, a happy, stable and successful team to work in, and a long and interesting career unfolding ahead of you.

What are we looking for? A science or technical qualification, a desire to move into a sales oriented occupation, the willingness to move to Hertfordshire (less than an hour from London, half an hour from Cambridge), and above all a high energy personality with indomitable enthusiasm. Someone whose pot is not merely half full, but is positively overflowing!

If you believe you are that person, then please telephone one of the two directors. No clues - that's your first test. If you pass (and jump all the other hurdles) - you're hired! (Haven't we heard that somewhere before?)

Fun in the Summertime!

  • Good news! The new football season fixture lists have been published. I was walking in the forest the other day when I came upon a (enter name of football team you'd like to disparage; for me it would be Tottenham Hotspurs) season ticket nailed to a tree. "I'll have that!" I said, "You can never have enough nails!"
  • A (enter nationality you'd like to belittle) man went into John Lewis's and asked for a potato clock. "A potato clock?!" said the sales assistant. What on earth do you mean? We have carriage clocks, grandfather clocks, but I've never even heard of a potato clock!" "Well," said the customer, "I've got a new job starting tomorrow, and my wife said I've got to get a potato clock!" (This joke was brought to us by my mate Will Moore)
  • Resolving to surprise her husband, an investment banker’s wife pops by his office. She finds him in an unorthodox position, with his secretary sitting in his lap. Without hesitation, he starts dictating, “…and in conclusion, gentlemen, credit crunch or no credit crunch, I cannot continue to operate this office with just one chair.” (from Hilarity-R-Us AKA Chairman and CEO Rod Lock)

Hot Jobs

Sadly the gorgeous weather we've been enjoying lately will turn to incessant rain, on account of the tennis championship at Wimbledon being about to begin. Nevertheless, Seltek would like to wish Andy Murray all the best, and express our sincere wish that he becomes the first Scottish winner of Wimbledon for...an extremely long time?

Closer to home though, you can lob yourself into a winning new career with one of our ace jobs, or create a serious advantage for your business by hiring one of our new ball candidates!

Oh I say, what a peach! As the late great Dan "The Gullikson twins here. An interesting pair, both from Wisconsin." Maskell might have said.
