So what is the Motorcycle Folly?
About the Motorcycle Folly
The Motorcycle Folly is a not-for-profit track riding "club"
formed in the early 1990s by a group of lawyers who raced cars and wanted
to try out their road bikes on the racetrack. It is now a limited company
(still not for profit) the directors and shareholders of which are the
"club" officers all of whom are involved so that they can ride
their bikes on the track. Once upon a time we were called the Lawyers'
Motorcycle Folly, these days there are still a few lawyers but most of
our members come from other occupations.
Club atmosphere
We call people who come to our days "members" because most of
them come regularly (it's an addictive activity). We have a club atmosphere
and the social side of the days are as important to us as track time.
We try to get together at a hotel for dinner on the night before each
meeting. Track time is important to us (see Our Days) and so is safety.
Things have moved on since the early 1990s. We are members of the Association of Track Day Organisers (ATDO) and subscribe to their Code of Conduct for track safety and day organisation. Amongst other things this means we carry public liability insurance. Loonies are discouraged – apart from anything else, when they fall off we all have to wait for them and their bikes to be recovered before we can carry on riding.
So where's the downside to this wonderful sounding group? Well, not being a commercial operation means that we don't have a constantly manned telephone desk and you might have to speak to an answering machine. We have been known to take some while to return phone calls and e-mail, but not generally more than a couple of days. We also only run a limited number of days each year. Quality over quantity!
Cost
In order to maintain the club atmosphere we try to keep numbers down on
the days so that even first timers do not feel like customers and everyone
gets as much track time and space as they want. This means less of us
sharing the cost of hiring the circuit, marshals and the mandatory paramedics
and ambulances.
As a result we are sometimes slightly more expensive than commercial days on a day-for-day basis (although not perhaps on a miles per £ basis) but that helps keep numbers down too.
