How to Win Out at Interviews

Preparation

In many cases, the first question you'll be asked will be 'What do you know about us?' Make sure you have an answer for this!

Presentation

First impressions are crucial. You can make or break your chances in the first five seconds.
Play the game - obey the rules. Short hair, look clean, wear a suit, shine your shoes.
Greet the interviewer with a smile and a firm dry handshake.

Don't be late

Lateness is never excusable. Plan your route. Allow twice as much time as you think you need. Stay overnight in a B&B rather than travel long distance on the day of the interview.

The Interview

Keenness and interest are two of the qualities most prized by recruiters. You can demonstrate both these qualities by asking good questions.

• Plan your questions beforehand. Write them down.

• One of the questions you must ask, is 'What exactly does the job involve?'

• By asking questions you:
  a) Demonstrate your keenness and interest to the employer
  b) Find out what you need to know to decide if you want the job

Answering Questions

• Look the interviewer in the eye.
  

• Be honest.

• Be succinct.

Be ready to answer the obvious questions:

• Tell me about yourself

• What are your strengths?

• What are your weaknesses?

• Why should we take you on?

Sell yourself!
Be ready to tell the interviewer about your successes. Focus on things you have done which demonstrate that you have gone beyond the norm.

The Golden Rule

Ask for the job! Employers are always more interested in people who are keen on the job. How will they know, unless you tell them?
